St. Paul’s has always encouraged a strong sense of Christian stewardship. We have been greatly blessed by God, and we seek to give back to God, in gratitude, through a generous sharing of our Time, our Talent, and our Treasure with our parish community and beyond.
 MINISTRIES

Dear Parishioners,
Not long ago I teased a St. Paul’s parishioner, asking him if he was about to change parishes. Without batting an eye, he responded, “No way. St Paul’s is my church, my parish, my family.

His words capture the special spirit of St. Paul’s. It’s a spirit of welcome, a spirit of belonging, a spirit of community.

That spirit bears fruit in and through the multiplicity of ministries detailed in this directory.

I am sure that you will find here a ministry that God has chosen for you. Each of you has a role to play in building up the Body of Christ. Some of you have a lot of time to share, others less. And of course your talents vary widely. But whatever you would like to do, don’t hesitate to offer yourself in service.

Fill out the commitment form contained in the directory, detach it, and return it to the parish office or in the collection basket.

Thank you for keeping the spirit of St. Paul’s alive and thriving.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Reverend Robert C. Gibbons

Pastor

A Brief History of St. Paul’s Parish

Bishop Barry of St. Augustine purchased our 10 acres, then consisting of scrub pine and swamp, in 1922.  He directed the pastor of the downtown parish of St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Parish to begin construction of a school building on this not-so-promising site.  Construction began in 1925, and Sunday Mass was celebrated regularly in the school auditorium beginning around 1926.

In 1929, St. Paul’s became its own parish with the appointment of the first pastor, Fr. James Enright.  A year later, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany arrived and opened the parochial school.

During the next twenty-five years, the parish experienced a building boom.  The convent, rectory, permanent church, cafeteria, and the high school building were built, and a second floor was added to the original school building.  This expansion coincided with the “baby boom” and the post-war explosion of development in Florida.  The parochial school has always been at the heart of our parish life, drawing young families to the church and enfolding them into a community of faith.

In recent years, the parish has benefited from the renaissance of St. Petersburg and its strategic location in the heart of the city.

St. Paul’s has always encouraged a strong sense of Christian stewardship.  We have been greatly blessed by God, and we seek to give back to God, in gratitude, through a generous sharing of our Time, our Talent, and our Treasure with our parish community and beyond.

Heavenly Father,
Look upon our community of faith, which is the Church of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Help us to witness to his love by loving all our fellow creatures without exception.
Keep us faithful to Christ's mission of calling all men and women to your service
"so that there may be "one fold and one shepherd."
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

We Welcome You to St. Paul’s Catholic Church
1800 12th Street North

Capital Campaign Update

Rooted in Faith … Inspired by Hope

Our parish wide capital campaign has been a great success. It has allowed us to renovate our church, put new windows in our school, and renovate the north wing of our school. The next phase of capital improvements will be the renovation of the south wing of the school. To do this, we need everyone to fulfill their pledges… and we need those who haven’t pledged to the campaign to do so. Help us fulfill our dreams!

Compassionate and loving God, You have been generous to us and have blessed us in the past. You continue to be generous in sharing Your gifts with us. Strengthen us in faith. Grant us the spirit of sacrifice so that with Your continuing grace, we may provide for the needs of our church and school and look to our future, united in faith, confident in hope and sincere in our love.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU TO BE A PART OF OUR CAMPAIGN!

For those parishioners who were unable to participate in our campaign, the need still exists! If your circumstances have changed allowing you to participate in this worthy endeavor, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office at 727-822-3481. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Stewardship Prayer

Almighty Father, we thank you for all the gifts You have given us: our lives; our loved ones; all that we have and all that we are.

Most of all, we thank You for Jesus, Your Son and our Redeemer, who came among us to show us the way to eternal life.

Jesus was the perfect Steward of Your gifts, showing us that complete trust in You is necessary, and that giving of self is the most important part of following Him.

May the offerings of our time, talent, and our material resources be made in the same spirit of sacrifice that Jesus taught us by His life and death for us.

Amen.

Mission Statement: The Social Justice Ministry of St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Petersburg, is a group of parish members and other interested persons who commit themselves to study the teachings on justice given to us through the Scriptures, Catholic Social Teaching, and the Church's historical witness, and to put into practice those Christian values which will tend to the good of all God’s creation.

Current  Focus: Global Climate Change. As an expression of Catholic Stewardship of the blessings God has given us, the members of the Social Justice Ministry commit to study global climate change. As a consequence of our study thus far, we individually pledge to implement specific actions to reduce climate change and to regularly review our pledge with the members of SJM.

We also feel called to share what we are learning and implementing with our parish, in collaboration with the parish Stewardship Council, and as a response to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Climate Change Justice and Health Initiative. The Bishops' Welcome Statement begins with this quote: "As people of Faith, we are convinced that 'the earth is the Lord's and all it holds'…. We believe our response to global climate change should be a sign of our respect for God's creation."  It continues,  "At its core, global climate change is not about economic theory or political platforms . . . .  It is about the future of God's creation and the one human family.”

Combining the teachings of the Church and wisdom of the saints with the best research from modern science in an interactive, multimedia format, That Man is You! puts this vision within the grasp of every man. That Man is You! seeks to form men who are fully alive by harmonizing what has typically been referred to as the Three Wisdoms of the Catholic Church: knowledge (secular knowledge including medical and social science); understanding (theology including Scripture, the Magisterium and Tradition); and wisdom (contemplative or mystical knowledge found primarily in the writings of the saints). For more information, contact Bill Teska through the parish office at 822-3481.

Traditional Adult Choir
The Traditional Adult Choir leads the congregation in song by providing music for the 11:30 Sunday Mass and for special programs throughout the year. Rehearsals are once per week during the week and also directly preceding Mass on Sunday. Rehearsals require about 2 hours of your time. Vocal talent required.  The ability to read music is helpful. Contact: Paul Dixon 822-3481.  Other music ministries: See Cantoring Ministry, Contemporary Adult Choir, and Folk Group.

Ushers
Offertory collection, pass out bulletins, head count. When necessary, assist with seating and be alert to emergencies, calling 911 if necessary. Head ushers have a few additional duties, depending on the mass. Time commitment: the duration of the Mass itself plus 10 to 15 minutes before mass, and a few minutes after mass.

Web Site
Our Web Site ministry keeps the Parish Web site up to date with news, announcements, bulletins, homily podcasts, and more. We analyze our traffic and hit ratios to constantly keep in touch with the needs and usages of our visitors, and are always looking for ways to improve our web site. We also work with the leaders of other ministries to establish and keep pages for their ministries. We can use your help if you are experienced with Web technologies like HTTP, HTML, FTP, and PDF, and if you have your own personal computer with a high-speed Internet connection along with the required software to generate and maintain Web pages. Contact Michele Forte through the Parish Office.

Safe Environment Training

Volunteers working with Children and Vulnerable Adults

It is the policy of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, and therefore of St. Paul's Church & School, to require a Level II background check and Safe Environment Program training for all volunteers entrusted in any way with the care and/or supervision of children, the elderly, or the infirm. Volunteers covered by this policy include all school volunteers; all volunteers in programs that include children; and all volunteers who visit hospitals, nursing homes and the elderly or infirm.  If you are unsure if you need this screening and training, please call the Parish Office. The intent of the policy is to do everything within our power to protect our children, youth, the elderly and the infirm from any abuse or neglect.

If you would like to volunteer in ministries covered by this policy, please fill out a Volunteer Application Form and an Authorization, Consent and Release for Background Check.  These forms are available in the parish or school office.  Safe Environment Program Training is available at parishes throughout the diocese. The training for volunteers with children, which is also an excellent program for parents,  requires approximately 2-3 hours, and there is a specific SEP Training for those who volunteer with the elderly or infirmed, such as Eucharistic Ministers to the homebound.  The schedule for these programs is published on the Diocesan website, http://www.dioceseofstpete.org, and in The Florida Catholic, and is available in the parish office.
